A Film Wedding Photographer’s Dream Venues in North Carolina

This past winter held a lot of daydreaming, ideas playing around in my mind whenever they could. Now, with spring arriving, it feels like they’re ready to take root. As a North Carolina film wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to spaces that feel lived in—places where history, emotion, and stillness can exist at once. Everything feels a bit more grounded here. From the vast mountain ranges to the lush gardens and antique buildings, there’s so much to take in of what this beautiful state has to offer.

I’m a nature gal through and through so anything wild and unconventional has my heart. It’s where I feel most present, and where you can too. These are a few venues across North Carolina I find myself coming back to again and again.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Honestly, a dream. I’m endlessly fascinated by this ancient mountain range. Imagine exchanging your vows with a view like this.. trekking up a mountain with just you and your partner, maybe a few friends, maybe your pets. Nothing but the smell of fresh air, wildflowers, winding roads, and the mountain tops to hold your ceremony dear and close. I’m here so often, it only feels right to one day document a wedding or elopement in the tall grasses. With a simple ($150) permit, this can be a really meaningful way to begin your journey.

Hill House, Durham

For my history and architecture lovers, this one is for you! Built in 1912, it’s a historic Spanish Colonial Revival mansion that has me gawking at every little detail. For a second there, you almost forget you’re still in North Carolina. I love the European touches sprinkled throughout, along with the moody staircase, beautiful archways, and open lawn that gives you so much variety to work with.

The Elizabethan Gardens

If you know me, you know I love visiting botanical gardens, and this one feels especially enchanting. I can’t imagine a more beautiful place to get married, especially on film! Everywhere you turn feels like a fairytale, soft and ethereal, like something out of another world. Film would enhance that by tenfold. A perfect early spring location and Outer Banks jewel, get married in the gardens one day, then search for wild ponies the next.

Burgwin-Wright House

Nestled in Wilmington, North Carolina, the Burgwin-Wright House is the only structure from the colonial era open to the public. The rooms are filled with 18th and 19th century antiques, which would add so much depth and character to a wedding gallery. I love how lush the garden is, and the maze at the front of the house.. just picture yourself running through it.

Airlie Gardens

This one reminds me a bit of Florida, which might be why I love it so much (where I was born & raised). The Spanish moss, the creek, and the pillars make this place feel whimsical and otherworldly. To stand beneath a 500 year old oak tree, with light cascading down on you, exchanging vows feels deeply symbolic. It’s like you’re standing within history, with your story becoming a part of it.

Brown Mountain Beach Resort

I’ve never seen a venue like this one before and I’m actually obsessed! I can just picture an “adult summer camp” wedding here: barefoot ceremonies on the beach, a dip in the river (formal attire and everything!), colorful flags strung above the dinner tables, beer canoe, potato sack races (bringing back memories anyone?), playing tunes by the campfire— just being a kid again. I love that it feels like a whole weekend to unplug with your people and just be. With yurts and cottages to stay in, plus kayaking, tubing, and hiking it really invites you to slow down and enjoy everything around you. It actually reminds me of a wedding I shot last summer, with it’s carefree energy and the way they truly prioritized being with their people over making anything feel like a performance.

McGill Rose Garden

During the summer, you’ll catch me here at least twice a week! It’s such a staple in Charlotte. The garden feels so romantic and intimate, with so many little spots to tuck into and be with your person. Flowers blooming, butterflies flittering past, the sun kissing your skin in just the right ways. At night, it’s especially magical— you’re just a little drunk off love (and maybe wine), wandering and discovering something new around every corner. The staff is also incredibly sweet and knowledgable. This would be such a dream to hold your sacred union. I’ve photographed both engagement and motherhood sessions here, so I know my way around this little haven.

Laurel Falls

A true hidden mountain getaway. My breath is taken away every time I see photos of this place. I can picture a late summer wedding taking place here, when everything is still lush and green and hot enough to where you can have a quiet dip in the falls. There’s so many pockets to explore, but I personally love the ceremony rock and pavilion. And yes, the name doesn’t deceive you, there’s a private waterfall you can enjoy or even host your ceremony!

The VanLandingham Estate

I drove by this venue once during a wedding and nearly broke my neck trying to read the sign, ha! That quick glance was enough to intrigue me. I love that it’s tucked away in a Charlotte neighborhood, creating a sense of privacy while still being close to the city. Imagine stepping away from the bustle and into these gardens for your ceremony, a quiet hush taking place. The tented reception space is such a classic, and allows so much freedom to make it your own. Oh how lovely it would be during the fall, with leaves turning their gorgeous purple, orange, red hue, and a soft breeze in the air.

The American Theatre

Although technically this one is located in Charleston, South Carolina, I couldn’t exclude this gem. As an art deco lover, I’m swooning. What a fun place to celebrate, whether it’s a wedding, elopement or something in between. On film, this would feel so rich, and we could play with lighting and flash in a way that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Because honestly... look at this place! Dance the night away or gather your friends and family to share your favorite movie as a couple. Celebrating here would seriously be a night to remember.

Planning Your Own Nature-Inspired Wedding in North Carolina?

North Carolina has such a wide range of landscapes, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to coastal gardens, making it a beautiful place for couples drawn to the flora and intimate celebrations.

If you’re planning an outdoor or nature-inspired wedding, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Season matters. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers and soft greens, while fall offers warm tones and cooler air. Let’s not forget winter though! Bare landscapes are beautiful in their own way. Up in the mountains, we do get the occasional snowfall, which can make for a winter wonderland if that’s something you’re drawn to.

Lighting is everything. Mountain light shifts quickly, meaning you may have less light than you would on lower elevation. Planning your ceremony earlier in the day can make all the difference if you’re hoping for a bright, airy feel.

Lean into the environment. Whether it’s rolling hills, towering trees or bodies of water, don’t be afraid to get a little dirty! Letting the landscape guide your day creates something that feels natural and rooted.

Keep it flexible. Outdoor weddings come with their own rhythm, and allowing space for that often leads to the most meaningful moments. A quick rain shower? That just means a closer gathering under cover. Strong sun? Bring those parasols out or seek shade under a tree. Having a back up plan can bring peace of mind, while also leaving space to stay present. Sometimes life really is unpredictable, but knowing the two of you can persevere through it all is what makes the day that much more special.

Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement along the Blue Ridge Parkway or a full weekend celebration tucked into the mountains, North Carolina offers so many beautiful ways to make it your own.
